ABOUT US
St Margaret of Antioch, Leiston-cum-Sizewell is the full title of our church. St Margaret’s
Church is to be found in Church Road, Leiston, which is a busy Suffolk country town. The Congregation of St Margaret’s forms a ‘warm church family’, and although many parishioners have been involved with the church for most of their lives, they are always ready to welcome new members and visitors into the church.
Choir
The choir at present comprises men and women, although we are always keen to welcome interested young people too.
The Choirmaster is always willing to encourage new members, who have a good voice and who can read music.
The choir meets for practice on Fridays at 7pm in the church. (For more details please email through our website or phone 01394 461580)
Church Magazine
St Margaret’s has a monthly church magazine that carries regular features and interesting articles, as well as information about local businesses. The Editor is always willing to accept articles to be considered for inclusion in the magazine. He can be contacted on 01728 833988.
Sunday School
The Sunday School at St. Margaret’s is fun! We go through some of the readings from the service and talk about what we think they might mean.
We always have something creative to do, drawing individual or group pictures, cutting and sticking, model making and all sorts of activities to inspire and encourage the children’s interest in Jesus and a Christian way of life.
We join the congregation, following the Intercessions, at about half way through the service and the children go to the front of the church and talk about what they have been learning. They are welcomed and encouraged by all members of the congregation.
On the first Sunday in the month we take an active part in the service, reading the lessons and sometimes leading prayers.
We enjoy Sunday School and would love to welcome more children of any age to join us. If you are interested in finding out more please ring Mrs Sandra Ellis on 01728 832168.
The Ministry of Healing and Ministry to the Sick and Housebound
The Ministry of Laying-on-of Hands with Prayer and Holy Anointing is always available by contacting the Vicar. The Blessed Sacrament is permanently reserved in the church and the Vicar will be pleased to take it to those who are ill or housebound. (01728 833408)
Ringing Chamber
The ringing chamber is where the church’s eight bells are rung. There has been a strong ringing tradition here since the 19th century and Leiston was once regarded as the ringing capital of East Anglia.
Charity Shop
We are very fortunate to have our own church charity shop – Margaret’s – that is located in the centre of the town and is run and staffed by a team of volunteers from the church.
Many local people donate a wide variety of articles that are in good condition, ranging from clothes, bric-a-brac, paperback books and various kitchen utensils and china.
The shop is always busy and is well-known locally for its stock of good value items.
The income from the shop pays a large amount of our yearly Parish Share to the Diocese as well as contributing towards the upkeep of the church building.
Social Events
We have a lively social committee that meets regularly to organise social and fund-raising events. We aim to have an event each month that is held in the church or in its environs. Full details are published on our News & Events page of the website.
Since the refurbishment of the church we are now a dual-purpose building. As can be read in our History we believe that the change has been made sympathetically without damaging the religious aspect of the building.
We are now able to hold concerts in the church and we welcome enquiries from choirs and similar organisations that are interested in using St Margaret’s Church as a venue. (Please use our Contact Us page to make your enquiry).
